In addition to learning on campus, the Australian teachers took the students closer to nature to experience new things.
On Saturday morning August 3, the students from WAIS travelled to the surrounding area to experience the local indigenous music, the didgeridoo. It is an Australian indigenous woodwind instrument. In the afternoon they went to the town of Inverell to dig for sapphires. The unique sapphires were found by the children in a small bucket of soil. They poured the soil into a sieve, filtered through the layers, then washed the soil in the pool. Finally, they could see the sapphires in the sunlight. They completely forgot about the dust on their bodies and immersed themselves in the fun of finding gems.
On Sunday August 4 the children were placed in groups and went to a farm near Armidale to ride horses. In order to ride a horse, you need to wear riding boots and a helmet, and then choose a horse. Many children fell off in the very beginning but gradually adapted to the feeling of riding. Everyone enjoyed the horseriding experience!
On August 8 the teachers and classmates, including Amy, Mr.Spencer (Director of Teaching) and the very popular Jono, started the outdoor program. It was held over four days and three nights. First the group travelled to the Dorrigo National Park. We passed through some of the Gondwana Rainforest. The towering trees and the variety of animals made the children very happy. With great excitement they saw a lot of green grass and cattle along the way. In the evening, they arrived at the campsite at Scotts Head Beach.
The house was rainbow-coloured, providing the children with a good space with their own sleeping bags. It was different from an ordinary hotel: the camp was fully equipped, but there was no service staff. They had to do their own cooking and garbage disposal and fold their own sleeping bags.
The next day the group went to Scotts Head Beach to collect shells and build sandcastles. In the evening everyone made dumplings together and the children ate their own dumplings, which was especially rewarding. On the third day the children went to the Coffs Harbour Aquarium to watch the sea lion and the dolphin show. They saw many animals such as penguins and peacocks. The teachers at the Aquarium also gave the children a vivid biology lesson so they could understand the biological chain and the living habits of some animals.
The children ended their three-week study at PLC Armidale and began their journey to Sydney. On August 18 everyone visited the Taronga Park Zoo, a very famous zoo in Sydney. While walking in the zoo they could not only to see the Sydney Harbour scenery, but they could also see a variety of cute animals. These included the tigers, the flying sea lions, swimming penguins, lazy koalas and various reptiles. When they took the cable car up the mountain, they could see the zoo in front of them and the harbor in the distance, the mountains and the sunshine. It was very spectacular!
Early on August 19 the children arrived at the Calmsley Hill Farm. They were excited to watch the koala show, the shepherd's whip show, the working dog farm show and the shearing show. They saw a flock of sheep on the hillside and checked the newborn lambs. In the afternoon they went to visit the famous university, the University of Sydney. The unique architectural style and its old buildings were fascinating.
On August 20 the group went to Anna Bay to do sand boarding, with sea water on one side and sand hills on the other. When they arrived at sand-sliding, the instructor told the children the rules and precautions. They excitedly climbed the sand slope with the skateboard and then slid down. Several of the children were initially scared. They sat down and refused to come down. Finally, with the encouragement of everyone, they experienced the fun of sand-sliding. After lunch, they went to Port Stephens to watch the whales. On the Pacific Ocean, the excited children cheered as the waves splashed! Although they didn’t see any whales, they saw the lazy sea lions on the island. Happy dolphins, the endless sea, the raging waves; everything was beautiful!
What did this experience of an overseas classroom in Australia mean for our children this summer? In all of the photos they were very happy. When we saw them communicating with the PLC teachers and students we felt that their oral language had improved. This month, everyone is growing very fast with small stars in their eyes and a bigger world in their hearts.
